No. 21 host Lawrence North came out on top of a three-way battle for wrestling superiority Jan. 23 at the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference Tournament, downing No. 19 Carmel by 4.5 points and No. 18 Center Grove by 14.5.
The Wildcats captured four individual championships and three runner-up finishes in totaling 204 points, just enough to get past the runner-up Greyhounds (two firsts, two seconds) and Center Grove, which advanced to exactly half of the 14 finals matches but came away with only two wins.
The victory was sweet revenge for the host Wildcats, who dropped a 34-27 dual-meet decision Dec. 9 at home to Carmel.
“We were happy with how our kids wrestled,” said LN coach Jared Williams. “We’ve been preaching all year about wrestling hard from whistle to whistle, and I thought our guys did that.
“We also knew it would probably come down to bonus points, and our guys did a nice job going after major decisions, tech falls, and pins.”
